Mac an Bhaird
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Clan Mac an Bhaird were one of the learned families of late Medieval Ireland. They were one of the leading clans of the Soghain in what is now Co. Galway and were based at Muine Casan and Ballymacward in that county. A branch of the clan settled in Tír Conaill and became more famous than their Soghain relatives. Famed members of the family included:
- Aodh Mac an Bhaird/Hugh Ward, d.1635
- Aodh Mac Diarmuda Mac an Bhaird
- Diarmaid Mac an Bhaird
- Eoghan Mac an Bhaird
- Eoghan Ruadh Mac an Bhaird
- Fearghal Óg Mac an Bhaird
- Fearghal mac Domhnuill Ruaidh mac an Bhaird
- Gofraidh Mac Briain Mac an Bhaird
- Laoisioch mac an Bhaird
Nowadays in both Donegal and Galway descendants of the family render their name Ward, while the forms Baird and Bird are found in lesser numbers. In the Gaeltacht the original version has never gone out of use. The surname means son of the bard.
