MacUpdate is an Apple Macintosh software download website, started in the late-1990s. It has been featured in several magazines and newspapers including The New York Times, USA Today, Detroit News & Free Press, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Leelanau Enterprise, Macworld Magazine and MacAddict.
MacUpdate is updated every day, listing the newest updates and releases of Macintosh software for the Mac OS and Mac OS X operating systems, it does not list Microsoft Windows or Linux software. The website is free to use, but membership service is also offered offering users more features including watchlists and the ability to turn advertisements off. It mainly competes against VersionTracker, a rival download website.
On 2005-12-25, MacUpdate briefly changed its homepage to one which advertised their firm religious beliefs, leading some to think that their site had been defaced by hackers. It was not a defacement, but was in fact a genuine reflection of the owners' belief in Jesus Christ.[1]
