Maban

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Maban is a material that is held to be magical in Australian Aboriginal mythology. It is the material from which karadjis, or wise-men, derive their alleged magical powers. The word maban is sometimes also used to refer to the wise-man himself.

Maban is variously identified by different Australian Aboriginal tribes with quartz crystals, tektites, or mother of pearl. During the ceremony in which a karadji initiates an apprentice, maban is used and spiritually "inserted" into the body of the apprentice.
