Lyssarea is a village in Southwestern Arcadia, Greece. It belongs to the Iraea municipality of Gortynia. It is build on slopped hillsides of “Ai Lias” and “skularas” hills and appears amphitheatric with its old stone – build and tile – roofed houses The oldest dated house here goes back to 1787’s. The majority of old inhabitants were builders (Greek χτιστάδες – μαστόροι). Lyssarea – Dimitsana distance is 30 km (by local – only one line – narrow road). The way goes through bright green ravines. A few kilometers from Lyssarea lies the Ancient Irea (Greek Αρχαία Ηραία). From Lyssarea the road directs to Ancient Olympia (65 km via Lutra Ireas and Liodora) Until 1928 Lyssarea was known as Bugiati (a name of unknown origin). Until the 1960's its population was only 800 people. In the central square were opened 14 commercial stores and shops. Four times a year, the Lyssarea People’s Association, (Greek Σύλλογος Απανταχού Λυσσαρεωτών, publishes a local journal Grigrilidi, featuring cultural content.
