[edit] Geography
The town Lycksele is situated along the Ume River, which drains the lake Storuman in north-west, and continues south-east through the province, emptying near the city Umeå in the Gulf of Bothnia on the east coast.
[edit] Transportation
Just south of the town is an airport, from where one reaches Stockholm in about 80 minutes.
Previously, the intersecting railroad between Umeå and Storuman was the main means of transportation, but its significance has diminished and passenger traffic has been discontinued. There are now daily buses to towns like Umeå, Storuman, Tärnaby, and Mo i Rana.
The European route E12, also known as Blå vägen (Blue Route), that windles along the Ume River, passes through the town.
[edit] History
The municipality traces its history to the Lycksele Parish, which was in effect during the 19th century, with very similar borders and size (5,000-5,500 km²). When it was turned into a municipality with the 1970s reform, it became one of Sweden's 20 largest.
Lycksele is the oldest permanent Sami settlement in Swedish Lappland. The first Swedish Sami school, Skytteanska skolan, was built here in 1634.
[edit] Today
Generally the northern municipalities, already sparsely populated, have population decreases, but various supporting projects also exist. A campus of the Umeå University is for instance situated here.
