Lwaxana Troi, Daughter of the Fifth House, Holder of the Sacred Chalice of Rixx, Heir to the Holy Rings of Betazed is a fictional character in the television series' Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Something of a free spirit, she is the widow of Ian Troi and mother of Deanna Troi, who often felt embarrassed by her mother's exuberant and flashy personality, and serves as the Betazoid ambassador to the Federation. As a Betazoid, she possesses telepathic abilities. She came to the USS Enterprise-D on several occasions. The most notable of her visits involve her search for a husband, fixing her sights at various times on a Ferengi, a Minister, a dying man, and Captain Jean-Luc Picard.
Troi was described by Star Trek's creators as "Auntie Mame in space". Most of the other characters, with the notable exceptions of Alexander Rozhenko and Odo, consider her an obnoxious pest. However, she has a deeper side — she is burdened by the death of her first daughter, Kestra, and by her widowhood. In the episode The Muse, Lwaxana says that she lost her parents, a sister and her husband, but nothing compared to the pain of losing Kestra.
In addition to Deanna and Kestra, Troi also has a son, born to a Tavnian named Jeyal. She was briefly married to Odo in order to void Jeyal's claim to the child. Star Trek original novels have suggested that her son is named Barin, but this was never substantiated in the television series.
Troi has a tendency to frequently remind people of her full title (Lwaxana Troi, Daughter of the Fifth House, Holder of the Sacred Chalice of Rixx, Heir to the Holy Rings of Betazed), especially in situations where she feels slighted. She is frequently accompanied by her ubiquitous valet, Mr. Homn. Mrs. Troi often mispronounces Lieutenant Commander Worf's name as Woof or Wolf.
Lwaxana Troi was played by Majel Barrett, wife of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry.
