In the animated series The Simpsons, Lunchlady Doris (originally voiced by Doris Grau) is an overweight, middle-aged, and laconic worker at the Springfield Elementary School cafeteria. During school cut backs, she also served as the school nurse.

[edit] Profile

It is occasionally implied that Lunchlady Doris and Groundskeeper Willie are romantically involved. She has served many distasteful things to the students, including whole beef hearts, horse testicles (which are apparently rich in iron), Grade-F meat ("Mostly circus animals, some filler"), rat's milk, shredded newspapers, AAA batteries, and ground-up gym mats ("There's very little meat in these gym mats").

She is also known for her dry sense of humor as demonstrated when Lisa approached her at the school cafeteria:

Lisa: Uhh, excuse me? Isn't there anything here that doesn't have meat in it?
Doris: Possibly the meat loaf.
Lisa: Well, I believe you're required to provide a vegetarian alternative.
Doris: (Picks up a hot dog in a bun, shakes the weiner out, and slaps the bun down on Lisa's tray.) Yum. It's rich in bunly goodness.
Lisa: (Dryly) Do you remember when you lost your passion for this work?

At this point Lunchlady Doris reaches down and presses the 'Independent thought alarm' button, the second occasion in one day that Lisa has caused it to be pressed.

After Grau's death in 1995, Lunchlady Doris was retired out of respect for over 10 years. Due to the delay between recording some episodes and the time they actually air, Grau's voice was included in episodes airing as late as 1997 such as "Lisa's Sax"[1]. Lunchlady Doris then became a silent background character and was mostly been seen in crowds and groups of other faculty members. In "Pokey Mom", when Skinner is planning to rearrange the lunch timetables, she opens her mouth to speak, but is interrupted by Milhouse. In the premiere episode of the 18th season of The Simpsons ("The Mook, the Chef, the Wife and Her Homer") that aired in September 2006, Doris finally speaks again, possibly played by Tress MacNeille.

The episode "Team Homer" was dedicated to the memory of Doris Grau. It was also implied in this episode that she is the mother of the Squeaky Voiced Teen. If so, then perhaps her full name is Doris Friedman.
