[edit] Significance of my Wikipedia username
My Wikipedia username does not have much significance. It was chosen in part because it is resistant to the sans-serif confusion abuse mentioned here.
[edit] My WP peeves
- Anonymous edits with no edit summaries. Most of them are understandable because they're good-faith edits (not necessarily good, but good-faith ) by newbies who don't know better. However, there is certainly often a correlation between quality of edit and whether the editor bothered to identify himself or bothered to provide a reason for the change.
- Vandalism. I would join the CVU except that I am not knowledgeable about how to use scripts, bots, and other IT wonders.
- The theory that Wikipedia should allow anonymous edits tracked by IP address only. Users should have to create an account (it's FREE) and log in if they want to edit. This one, small, simple "barrier" does not even amount to a barrier for anyone who has enough brains to have something worthwhile to add to Wikipedia. I have read some of the discussion of this topic, and I am still ruminating over the counterarguments that the current system is actually best. Currently I still think that 30-70% of the vandalism wouldn't happen if vandals (a) had to bother to create an account and log in and (b) felt slightly less anonymous.
[edit] My WP joys
- Wikipedia's mere existence
- The fact that in a few short years Wikipedia has gone from not even existing to being in some ways the best annotated dictionary of acronyms and abbreviations on earth. (Yes, I know that WINAD. What I am saying is, when you need to know the spell-out of any acronym or abbreviation (common or rare), plus find out incidentally every other thing it may possibly stand for, plus have a nice encyclopedic explication of each of those meanings just one click away, Wikipedia has become the best place to check first.)
