Luke Varney (born September 28, 1982 in Leicester) is an English professional football (soccer) player. He is a forward and currently plays with Crewe Alexandra. He signed for Crewe Alexandra from Midland Football Alliance club Quorn F.C. in 2003 for £50,000, becoming the first ever player to command a fee at Quorn's level.[citation needed]
He has played more than 70 games for the Alex.
On 26 October 2006 in the Carling Cup against Manchester United F.C. to equalise for Crewe. Soon afterwards, Varney could have netted the winner but the United goalkeeper, Tomasz Kuszczak saved his shot. Varney's goal forced the match into extra-time and Crewe were very close to settling the game by penalities had United's young striker Kieran Lee not scored in the 119th minute. However, Varney's perforfance has shown why Premiership scouts want him so badly!
