Luke Ski

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The great Luke Ski is the stage name of Luke Sienkowski, a parody/filk musician who writes, records and performs comedy music. (Note: the decapitalization of the word "great" in Sienkowski's stage name is his own preferred spelling, and the title has appeared as such on all of his albums to date.) He had the #1 most requested song on the Dr. Demento radio show in both the year 2002 and the year 2003.

Topics of his parodies have included The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, Spider-Man, Keanu Reeves and Hamlet. He has, in one song, parodied all the Star Trek television shows. His parody songs are reminiscent of the pop music works of "Weird Al" Yankovic. Filking (new lyrics to well-known tunes, usually on a science fiction or fantasy topic) has been around since the 1950s. Luke helped bring parodies of rap and hip-hop to Science Fiction conventions. He doesn't play an instrument, and sings to pre-recorded music, often in costume or with props. Much of his work skewers science fiction movies and television, and their marketing. He has the uncanny ability to capture an entire career or summarize the best part of a movie in just a few words. The songs are often from the perspective of a fan, who is completely aware that The Lord of the Rings movies exist in the same universe as the Harry Potter movies -- ours. Many of his longer works are snippets of song parodies collected together into an extended medley, such as Grease Wars or It's A Fanboy Christmas.

Since 1996, Luke has released numerous albums. He is a frequent performer at science fiction and gaming conventions. Luke is also an accomplished caricature artist.

Luke Ski also hosts the weekly show Dementia Revolution on Dementia Radio.

Luke portrayed P.T. Barnum on three episodes of The Radio Adventures of Dr. Floyd.

Luke appeared as several characters in the Shockwave Radio Theater production "Let's Play Doctor" at the 2004 Marscon.

[edit] Trivia

Luke tends to garner the most comparisons as possibly being "the next Weird Al" in the comedy music business, due to hitting Dr. Demento's #1 "Funny 25" spot two years in a row (2002, 2003) with different hits, a feat that, before him, only Weird Al had accomplished (1980, 1981) (Worm Quartet accomplished this feat after Luke (2004, 2005), and Ogden Edsl hit #1 two years in a row (1982, 1983) with the same song, "Dead Puppies").
