LugRadio
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
LugRadio is a UK-based internet radio programme aimed at fans of Linux and open source and free software (FOSS). It is made by four Linux users: Jono Bacon, Stuart Langridge, Ade Bradshaw and Matthew Revell. It takes a more relaxed and humorous attitude than other shows, containing strong language at times.
A new episode is published on Monday on a fortnightly schedule, and is available in Ogg Vorbis and MP3 formats.
The show gets between 6,000 and 15,000 downloads per episode[citation needed], depending on who the main interview guest is. A community of voluntary mirrors, combined with the sponsored primary download archive, take the majority of the transfer strain and is one of the many examples of community involvement that have strengthened the show. The episodes are also available via bittorrent.

[edit] Community
LugRadio has fostered a very strong and loyal community thanks to listener interaction encouraged by the presenters, and the adoption of IRC and web forums amongst the earliest listeners to discuss topics arising from each show's content and to suggest new topics for future shows. Other services and projects include a community wiki, IRC quotes database and blog planet.
In August 2006, after discussion at LugRadio Live 2006, the show spawned a community-created podcast — hashlugradio — whose name derives from the LugRadio IRC channel #lugradio
. The topics on the podcast are primarily led from LugRadio itself, where discussions are carried on when the LugRadio presenters may not have had time to talk further on a particular subject.
[edit] LugRadio Live
LugRadio Live is a conference and social gathering, centering around LugRadio and the FOSS developments, which offers a chance for UK developers to see each other in person and discuss developments in the FOSS world.

[edit] Trivia
The now somewhat infamous phrase, "Ubuntu, they drink it in the Congo," a parody on the British tropical fruit drink Um Bongo, originated from LugRadio. This led to the creation of an Ubuntu jingle [1] which was later played on the show [2]. As a result, the phrase has become quite popular especially as an esoteric joke when talking in reference to Ubuntu Linux.
