Lucy Irvine

Lucy Irvine is a British writer, born 1 February, 1956 in Whitton, Middlesex. She wrote the 1983 book Castaway published by Victor Gollancz Ltd., which was the basis of the 1986 film Castaway.
Prior to writing Castaway she had been employed as a charlady, monkey keeper, waitress, stone mason's mate, life model, pastry cook, and concierge. She had run away from school at an early age and had no full-time schooling after her thirteenth birthday.
She also wrote Runaway and, most recently, Faraway (publication details needed).

This book was written when I was twenty-seven and first published in 1983. I had spent a year with a stranger on an uninhabited island called Tuin, in the Torres Strait. Castaway describes the experience. )

I wrote this book after Castaway although it tracks the years before it. People kept asking me why I went on the island venture and I had to look back in time to find the real answer. In the extract below I was not on holiday. I had hitchhiked from Scotland to Greece and was now on my way to Turkey and Israel )
