Lucky Stiff

Lucky Stiff is a musical; it was the first collaboration for the musical theater team of Lynn Ahrens (book and lyrics) and Stephen Flaherty (music). The show is based on the 1983 novel "The Man Who Broke the Bank at Monte Carlo" by Michael Butterworth. It was created and performed on off-Broadway in 1988, and won the Richard Rodgers Award for that year.

The plot is about a British man, Harry Witherspoon, who gets an inheritance from a recently-deceased rich uncle from New Jersey. The inheritance comes with a catch: to claim it, Harry must first take his uncle's dead body on a weeklong vacation to Monte Carlo. Harry and the body travel to Monte Carlo, where Harry gets entangled with, among others, a woman from a dog shelter that stands to collect the money if Harry does not precisely meet the terms of the will.

The show is occasionally performed at regional theaters, and the song "(At) Times Like This (A Girl Could Use A Dog)" has become a standard for cabaret singers.
