The London and South Western Railway N15 Class also known as the King Arthur Class is a class of 2-cylinder 4-6-0 passenger steam locomotives with 6 foot 7 inch (2007 mm) driving wheels. They all carried names from Arthurian legend.

[edit] Construction

They were built in six batches:

The first two batches were designed by Robert W. Urie, and built in two batches each of 10 engines by the London and South Western Railway's Eastleigh Works in 1918–19 and 1922–23. After further examples were built by the Southern Railway, these first 20 engines were known as "Urie Arthurs," and given names of people and places related to the Arthurian legends. O. V. S. Bulleid subsequently rebuilt five of the engines with a Lemaître exhaust.

After the Grouping, Richard E. L. Maunsell built a third batch of 10 to a slightly modified design at the Southern Railway's Eastleigh works in 1925. These are referred to as "Eastleigh Arthurs." They were inteded as a stop-gap measure, and re-used the 4,300 gal. (19,500 litre) tenders and running numbers of the Drummond G14 and P14 class engines that they replaced.

Maunsell ordered two more batches from the Scottish building firm North British Locomotive Company in 1924 for delivery for following year. These 30 engines are referred to as "Scotch Arthurs." They were built to the Southern's new composite loading gauge, and equipped with 8-wheel bogie tenders of 5,000 imperial gallon (23 m³) capacity.

The last batch was for 15 engines for the Eastern division, and were adapted to take a 6-wheel, 3,500 imperial gal. (16 m³) tender. They were built at Eastleigh in 1926–27. However, the last engine was cancelled, and the prototype "Lord Nelson" class engine built instead.

[edit] Specifications

The Urie engines had 180 lb/sq in boilers and a weight of 80 tons 7 cwt (81.6 t) and 21 by 28 inch (533 by 711 mm) cylinders, apart from No 755 which had somehow acquired cylinders with 22 inch (559 mm) bore.

The Maunsell engines all had boilers pressurised to 200 lbf/in² (1.4 MPa) and cylinders of 20.5 inch (520 mm) bore and 28 inch (711 mm) stroke. Detail differences resulted in weights of 80 tons 19 cwt (82.2 t) for Nos 448 to 452 and 763 to 792, 79 tons 18 cwt for Nos 453 to 457, and 81 tons 17 cwt (82.1 t) for Nos 793 to 806.

Their crews recognised them as competent without being inspiring or having any vices.
