80's history. Lowry Park Zoo used to be mainly a park with rides, including a skyride and a mini-rollercoaster. There was a small "storybook" area with scenes from fairy tales. There was also a magic show with Pockets the Clown. The "zoo" part was very small and all the animals were in cages. There was a monkey named Joey and people would give him cigarettes that he would smoke. In 1987, one of the cars flew off the track of the rollercoaster, injuring four people.
