Lowville (village), New York

Lowville is a village in Lewis County, New York, United States. The population was 3,476 at the 2000 census. The name is derived from Nicholas Low, an early landowner.

The Village of Lowville is within the Town of Lowville. Lowville is the county seat of Lewis County. The village is at the junction of New York State Route 12 and New York State Route 26, west of the Black River.

Silas Stow, an early settler, established himself in Lowville in 1797. The Village of Lowville was incorporated in 1847.

Lowville is located at 43°47′11″N, 75°29′15″W (43.786662, -75.487645)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 4.9 km² (1.9 mi²). None of the area is covered with water.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 3,476 people, 1,403 households, and 882 families residing in the village. The population density was 706.4/km² (1,830.8/mi²). There were 1,588 housing units at an average density of 322.7/km² (836.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the village was 96.66% White, 0.75% Black or African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.83% Asian, 0.75% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.01% of the population.

There were 1,403 households out of which 32.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.5% were married couples living together, 11.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.1% were non-families. 33.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.34 and the average family size was 2.99.

In the village the population was spread out with 25.8% under the age of 18, 6.8% from 18 to 24, 25.4% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 21.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 83.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.2 males.

The median income for a household in the village was $32,841, and the median income for a family was $42,399. Males had a median income of $31,831 versus $21,422 for females. The per capita income for the village was $17,172. About 13.9% of families and 14.9% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.5% of those under age 18 and 17.8% of those age 65 or over.
