Low German (disambiguation)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Low German may refer to:
- Low German, a group of dialects spoken mainly in Northern Germany and in Northeastern Netherlands.
- A postulated language group consisting of Low German (as in the previous list item) and Low Franconian. That group goes back to 19th century historical linguistics when language families were only thought of as binary tree diagrams. It is not recognized by current linguistics; see instead Low German or Low Franconian languages.
- A colloquial term for any non-standard variety of the German language.
Low Germanic is a term used by the German linguist Theo Vennemann who believes that the primary division of the Germanic languages is the division into Low Germanic and High Germanic; see High German consonant shift.
