Lovesexy World Tour
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Lovesexy World Tour was Prince's final concert tour of the 1980s, to support his album of the time Lovesexy.
[edit] History
The tour began in France, July 1988, playing nearly 100 shows before ending in Japan, 1989.
Although the tour was a huge success in terms of audience numbers, it was loss-making financially; Prince used elaborate props on stage such as a basketball hoop, a fountain, trellis fences and (for the final song "Alphabet Street") a fully working Ford Thunderbird automobile. On his next tour, Prince kept stage demands to a minimum to save money. Also this tour was expensive to produce as it included only a handful of concerts in the United States, largely due to the American public's lack of interest in Lovesexy.
[edit] The show
Designed to mainly support Lovesexy, the two-hour shows included all nine songs from the record, alongside hits and rarer material. In usual Prince fashion, many shows saw the premier appearances of new tunes, particularly "Blues in C (If I Had a Harem)".
Thematically, the show was divided into two main acts; the first act which ran for an hour consisted mainly of older material from Prince's earlier albums, often strung together into medley form to ease time constraints. The show often began with "Erotic City" and Act One often concluded with "Anna Stesia". Act Two consisted largely of songs from Lovesexy, plus classics like "Kiss" and, towards the end of the concert, "Purple Rain", "Let's Go Crazy" and "1999". The highlight of many shows was the piano medley in the second act, often featuring "When 2 R in Love", "Venus DeMilo", "Starfish and Coffee", "Raspberry Beret" and "Condition of the Heart".
