Lovelock (1994), a novel by Orson Scott Card & Kathryn H. Kidd, is set in a near-future where mankind is preparing to send out its first interstellar colonization ship, the Mayflower. The story is written from the first-person viewpoint of Lovelock, a genetically- and cybernetically-enhanced Capuchin monkey, who serves as the "Witness" (a type of assistance animal whose job it is to record every waking moment of the life of a prominent member of society) for Carol Jeanne Cocciolone, the Mayflower's Gaiaologist. As the target planet for colonization will no doubt need extensive terraforming, the goal of the Gaiologist (a scientist specializing in the field of Gaia Theory) will be to integrate the terrestrial species needed for the colonists' survival with the planet's existing ecology.
