[edit] Recording and release
In January 1989, Minogue signed a recording contract with Australian-based record label Mushroom Records. Seven months later, while on break from her television work, she flew to New York City to begin recording her debut album with producers Alvin Moody and Vincent Bell. Highly influenced by American R&B music, Minogue chose to record the Moody penned "Love and Kisses" as it did not sound like any other pop songs being released in Australia at the time.
The following year the song was released as Minogue's debut single in Australia. The song's chart success led to record deals outside of Australia and Minogue was invited to promote the single for three weeks in the United Kingdom and then in Japan. The song was remixed for both markets. Its success on the charts outside of Australia resulted in the recording of additional songs for a full length album release and launched Minogue's recording career outside of her homeland.
[edit] Music video
"Love and Kisses" featured a music video that was directed by Paul Goldman and Craig Griffin and filmed in Australia in early 1990. Two slightly different versions of the video were produced, but with little differences. The highly choreographed video is plot less and features a brunette, leather clad Minogue dancing in front of a white background with a group of dancers. The video begins with close up images of Minogue, before showing Minogue and her backup dancers dancing in front of a changing background. Intercut with the dance scenes are close-up, black and white images of Minogue singing by herself.
Kelly Abbey, one of the dancers in the video, later worked with Minogue eight years later on Grease: The Arena Spectacular stage show in Australia.
