[edit] History
Love Spirals Downwards were begun by multi-instrumentalist, Ryan Lum, as a solo recording project sometime in the late 1980's. In 1991 then-girlfriend, Suzanne Perry, joined on as vocalist to record a demo that lead to a contract with Projekt Records.[1]
Over their 8-year history Love Spirals Downwards released 4 full-length albums, 1 career retrospective, and 1 CD-single, selling in excess of 40,000 CDs [2]. They were also included on over two dozen various artist compilations [3], including the influential Heavenly Voices series released by the German Darkwave label, Hyperium Records.
Lum worked with several other vocalists and musicians in addition to Perry, including Perry's sister, Kristen, who appears on the 1998 album, Flux. Kristen Perry had actually recorded several demos with Lum prior to Suzanne Perry joining the band [4]. Jennifer Ryan Fuller joined the duo in 1994 as a guest vocalist on two tracks for their sophomore release, Ardor. Her vocals from one of these songs, "Sunset Bell," were reused for a new version of the song 4 years later.
Although the band never officially broke up, in 1999 Lum began releasing music under the shortened moniker, Lovespirals, featuring new vocal collaborator, Anji Bee. In 2000, a career retrospective was released by Projekt including new remixes of more recent Love Spirals Downwards tracks and promotional materials that seemed to indicate the band were still active. [5]
However, in 2002 Projekt Records released Lovespirals' first full-length CD, Windblown Kiss, which did not include long time Love Spirals Downwards vocalist, Suzanne Perry. Soon after, Projekt Records announced that Perry would release a maxi-CD under the band name, Melodyguild, in 2003. The release was pushed back several times before disappearing from the label's roster. In late 2006, the EP reappeared as an upcoming 2007 release. [6]
[edit] Radio support
Love Spirals Downwards were a staple band of the internationally syndicated New Age/Ambient/Acoustic Public Radio International program, Echoes. In addition to regular airplay, Lum and S. Perry performed as part of their "living room concert" series [7] and recorded two interview features [8] [9] with show host, John Diliberto.
