Love Music Hate Racism is a campaign organised by the Anti-Nazi League and Unite Against Fascism. It organises musical concerts with the aim of spreading the anti-racist message through music. It follows in the tradition of anti-Nazi music movements started by Rock Against Racism in the 1970s. Rock Against Racism (RAR) was also organised by the Anti-Nazi League.
Love Music Hate Racism was set up in 2002 as a result of increasing support for the far right British National Party there first big events was a festival in Manchester’s Platt fields headlined by Doves and Ms. Dynamite. The organisation has continued to work with top acts including three winners of the prestigious Mercury Prize (Dynamite, Dizzee Rascal and Badly Drawn Boy).
Centeral to the ethos of the organisation is the idea that modern music is born of many different influences and traditions and is enriched by different cultures and can therefore be used to bring people together. For this reason you will often see very different kinds of music at the same event.
In 2005 the film who shot the sheriff charting the history of RAR was relieced and toured the country with LMHR events including the Liverpool tribute to murdered teenager Anthony Walker performed at by Ms. Dynamite, Roll Deep, The Stands, and Lupe Fiasco.
Notable events recently have included two large events supported by Love Music Hate Racism and Unite Against Fascism in Trafalgar Square.
Prominent supporters from the musical world include The Libertines, David Gray, Ms Dynamite, The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster and Belle and Sebastian.
