Louvre Atlanta
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Louvre Atlanta is an unprecedented partnership between the High Museum of Art and the Musée du Louvre in Paris that brings hundreds of works of art from the Louvre's collections to Atlanta. Built around specific themes and periods, the High will present a series of long-term special presentations of art from the Louvre beginning October 2006 through 2009. Over the course of the three-year partnership, Louvre Atlanta will trace the history and development of the Louvre from the 17th century through the present. The collaboration will also include the exchange of cultural expertise and operational strategies, as well as educational programs and the development of joint bilingual publications, conferences, films and seminars exploring exhibitions and related themes.
Louvre Atlanta grew out of a longstanding friendship and history of exchange between the museums' directors, Michael Shapiro and Henri Loyrette. The two had worked together previously when organizing the High's 1999 presentation of Impressionism: Paintings Collected by European Museums. A significant portion of the loans from that exhibition came from France's Musée d'Orsay, where Loyrette was director at the time. Their relationship continued through the development of the High's 2002 exhibition Paris in the Age of Impressionism: Masterworks from the Musée d'Orsay, even as Loyrette moved on to lead the Louvre in 2001.

The High Museum of Art has partnered with the Atlanta Convention and Visitor's Bureau and area hotels to offer hotel packages for Louvre Atlanta for any budget. Visitors can visit www.atlanta.net/louvreatlanta to view all the packages.
The High is please to offer visitors a variety of programming related to the Louvre Atlanta exhibitions. From lectures to art-making workshops to evening wine tastings, there is something for everyone. Listings of these events are available on the High’s new website devoted to Louvre Atlanta, www.louvreatlanta.org. In addition to event and programming listings, the site offers a number of interactive tools where visitors can learn more about the art on view in the exhibitions.
The total budget for Louvre Atlanta is estimated at $18 million. This includes a $6.4 million payment by the High which will go towards the restoration of the Louvre’s 18th-century French decorative arts galleries. The balance of the budget offsets the development of the Louvre Atlanta partnership. These funds will allow the High to develop special programming in Atlanta, and will cover costs associated with mounting three years of programming, encompassing the nine exhibitions, such as insurance, travel, marketing, and advertising and security for this unprecedented project.
To date, the High Museum of Art has raised nearly $16 million in support of this project. Lead patronage for the project has been provided by longtime High Museum Board Member Anne Cox Chambers. Accenture is the Presenting Partner. UPS, Turner Broadcasting Corporation, The Coca-Cola Company, Delta Air Lines and AXA Art Insurance are Lead Corporate Partners for “Louvre Atlanta.” Foundation Partner is The Sara Giles Moore Foundation. Additional support has been provided by Forward Arts Foundation, Frances B. Bunzl, and Tull Charitable Foundation. This exhibition is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities, Samuel H. Kress Foundation, The Charles Engelhard Foundation and American Friends of the Louvre, and Cultural Services, French Consulate General in Atlanta. The Rich Foundation serves as Planning Partner for the partnership.
