Louisiana Girls State

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Louisiana Girls State was started in 1941 by the American Legion Auxiliary. It is held on the LSU campus. Louisiana is the only program to hold concurrent sessions with Boys State, which is also held on the LSU campus. It is the second largest program and for the first time in the summer of 2006 sent delegates to Girls Nation. During the eight days at Girls State, the citizens hold positions in the city, parish and later, state offices. When not in classrooms or convocations, the girls walk around cheering and chanting with their Parish. Due to both Boys State and Girls State being in session at the same time, there is a joint dance held at the LSU Union ballroom. At the dance it is a tradition that a girl trade t-shirts with a boy. Then the next day, all the girls wear Boys State shirts and all the boys wear Girls State shirts. Towards the end of the program the Girls State participants are given a charm necklace that is shaped like the state of Louisiana. The final night is held at the State Capitol building and parents are invited to watch their girls in action in the Senate and House Chambers.

At Louisiana Girls State, there are ten parishes, each with two cities.
