Lothlórien Co-op

Lothlórien Co-op or Loth is a 31 room housing cooperative on Lake Mendota. It is named after the elven paradise from the works of J. R. R. Tolkien. Near the UW Campus located at 244 W. Lakelawn Ave. in Madison, WI. It is a member of Madison Community Cooperative.

Lothlórien was founded in 1973 based on the Rochdale Principles.

[edit] Elves
Members of Lothlórien are called elves. Elves do general house and yard cleaning, water the gardens, pick-up groceries, maintain the house, and other things.

Lothlórien's Elven Council meets once a week on alternating Sundays and Mondays. The council is made up of all elves wish to attend. To begin council a quorum of at least 1/3 of the elves currently living at Lothlórien must be present, otherwise all decisions made may be overturned at subsequent council. Councils are structured with formal consensus decisionmaking using the book "On Conflict and Consensus" as a guide.

Lothlórien is well known for its vegetarian food. Dinners are usually vegan, but sometimes vegetarian with a vegan option. Fresh bread and raw yogurt is made regularly.
Whenever possible food is organic, acquired from the garden, from CSAs, local producers, and from other co-ops, and eggs come from free roaming chickens. Milk is unpasteurized.
Importing of food from long distances is discouraged. Lothlórien does not buy meat, Genetically modified organisms, refined sugar, bananas, coffee, bleached flour, or milk from cows injected with rBGH nor products of Monsanto or Tyson Foods.
