Los Ríos Region is a proposed region of Chile. If created it would contain the Valdivia Province which is currently in Los Lagos Region in the southern Chile.

The proposed region would have a population of 356,396 inhabitants, according to the 2002 census.

In October 19, 2005 the Chilean President, Ricardo Lagos, signed a bill which will be sent to the Congress in 2006 for its approval and calling for the creation of Los Ríos Region (The Rivers Region). According to the Roman numeral designation, traditionally used in the Chilean administrative system, this region would have the number XIV (fourteenth). However, steps are being taken to eliminate the use of Roman numerals.

If approved Los Rios Region will be divided in two provinces: Valdivia (Valdivia, capital city) and Ranco (La Unión, capital city)

[edit] Background

The purpose of creating this new region is based mainly on territorial, historical and geographic aspects. The current Los Lagos Region is one of the biggest and most diverse regions in Chile, and the integration of the Valdivia Province was difficult due to its having a different background to the four other provinces of the region -- especially the southern provinces of Chiloé and Palena.

Supporters of this proposal are convinced that, with this new administrative and territorial division, the Los Lagos Region authorities may focus on reinforcing the integration of the isolated Chiloé and Palena.
