Lorinseria areolata Presl |
The genus Lorinseria is a monotypic genus, comprising the net-vein chain fern, Lorinseria areolata. This species is often included in the genus Woodwardia, but is segregated due to its anastamosing veins and lobed frond form, as well as its more marked frond dimorphism.
This species is peculiar to eastern North America, and requires wet, acid conditions, often growing in seeps. Most common along the Atlantic coastal plain, it is an avid colonizer of acid mine seeps in the eastern United States, being one of the few plants to benefit from acid mine drainage.
Some people confuse this species with the sensitive fern, Onoclea sensibilis.
