Lord Robert Montagu

Lord Robert Montagu (January 24, 1825 – May 6, 1902) was a British politician.
Robert Montagu was born at Melchbourne, Bedfordshire on January 24, 1825, the second son of the 6th Duke of Manchester and Millicent (née Sparrow). He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and graduated as a MA in 1848.
He was the Conservative Member of Parliament for Huntingdonshire from May 1859, and for Westmeath from February 1874 until he retired in 1880. He favoured protectionist policies. He was President of the Board of Health and Vice-President of the Privy Council from March 1867, resigning in December 1868.
He married Ellen Cromie, daughter of John Cromie, at Dublin on February 12, 1850. They had four children although their first son, John, died as a child. Ellen died aged 32 on July 11, 1857 at Portstewart, County Londonderry. Their son Robert Acheson Cromie Montagu was born in 1854. Montagu remarried in London on October 18, 1862 to Elizabeth Wade, daughter of William Wade of Holton, Suffolk.
Montagu was a member of the Carlton Club and the Athenaeum Club.
He died 6 May 1902 at 91 Queens Gate, South Kensington, London and was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery. He was survived by his wife, three children and one grandson.
