[edit] Same pattern?

I'm not certain if this is a clueless newbie or an active vandal, but I've made over 60 reverts in the past few days (and I'm only a fraction of the team doing it) to a user that adds pages to categories that have not been created. Most articles are in Category:fictional animals and, to a lesser degree Category:Prehistoric mammals. I was wondering if the pattern might be similar. See User:202.152.162.215 and User:202.152.162.216. See also history of Template:Fictional animals cat for a good example of this activity. --Aranae 11:25, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Recent possible user name

A Flair Girls (talk • contribs • logs • block user • block log) had recently editted {{Cartoon Cartoons}} with false information regarding various cartoons on the Cartoon Network. I removed several that I knew were false, and a subsequent user removed several others that turned out to be false. Another user put a message on the user's talk page and that directed me here. I don't know if this is how I should notify anyone of the possible vandal, but it certainly looks as if it is the case with this new user. Ryulong 02:27, 31 May 2006 (UTC)

Rerd (talk • contribs • logs • block user • block log) and Mrknowitman (talk • contribs • logs • block user • block log) have been vandalizing some pages on The Lion King. Mrknowitman keeps adding nonsense and deleting the category boxes on some pages. I don't know if they are sockpuppets of MascotGuy or new editors who need to learn to stop vandalizing pages. If an administrator needs some more information, then let me know.

Cliffer Guy (talk • contribs • logs • block user • block log) is making some edits similar to that of MascotGuy. No edit summaries, edits the whole article, and is focussing on animation (and concrete?). I caught him on my watchlist for Cartoon Cartoons and Template:Cartoon Cartoons. In the article, he basically reversed the concensus about original animation past 2003 (from what I gathered, I think he was saying that there were Cartoon Cartoons past 2003). And he reverted the Template then reverted it again. He's only made a handful of contributions so far, but with what he has done, he's looking a lot like MascotGuy. Ryulong 20:56, 29 June 2006 (UTC)

We seem a bit quick on the block button when a new user shows up who doesn't use edit summaries. Certainly not all of User:Chicken Collar Guy and User:Shockin' Starlights edits were vandalism. Don't we get lots of users who fail to use the preview button and the edit summary field? Powers 21:07, 6 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ban by IP

What about using CheckUser to get MascotGuy's IP(s) and then banning the IP(s)? (It is my understanding that when banning an IP you can also ban anyone logged in that might be using that IP.) Maybe if this guy is completely locked out of editing (instead of being able to edit for a few hours and then getting banned, and then a new account...) there is a chance he might actually get the message. In particular all of the later sockpuppets have made edits such as [1], on Sears Holdings Corporation, where he turns "Super Kmarts" to "Super Ks". I don't know what the heck is wrong with him. Don't understand why he would register three accounts all in one day, but it is very obvious that these accounts are owned by the same person. None of the contribution timestamps suggest that any two of these accounts were used simultaneously: Downfall Guy was registered on the same minute as Nougat the Great's last edit, etc. Tuxide 22:50, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
He probably edits from different locations/computers (sometimes he messes up and edits as an IP address and I've seen at least 3 different IP address he has used, none in the same subnet), so he probably just registers a new account every time the old one gets blocked or when he goes to a new location/computer. He uses an account until it gets banned. Sometimes he has more than one account active at a time. This is consistent with my theory that he uses multiple computers and uses the same account (on each computer) until it gets blocked (or sometimes changes after a few days if it doesn't get banned). I doubt this is a simple case of forgetting his account. He purposefully registers a new account every day or so with no intention of using it for more than a day or two. And now, the question: Should I bother reporting these socks on WP:AIV? It seems that sometimes, an admin who happens to be patrolling the page dosen't know who MascotGuy is, despite me providing this page (take this for example). Another time, it was mention that he shouldn't be blocked, because he had some "good edits". I've also been admonished by admins for putting him on WP:AIV on the grounds that that incarnation of him has not caused any vandalism as of when I reported him. And, to be fair, it's for reporting vandalism, not sock puppets, which is a whole different procedure. Of course, while it's true he does do some good edits, the bad far outweighs it. Since then, whenever I have encountered a new incarnation of him, I put the {{blatantvandal}} template on his talk page immediately, so when the inevitable occurs, an admin who is not in the know about MascotGuy will be in a better position to act. The {{MascotGuy}} template used to identify our favourite editor seems to be coming under fire from an admin named DragonflySixtyseven. He has been redirecting it (as well as a duplicate template called {{mascotguy}} (note all lower case)) to {{Pageblankvandal}} instead. Perhaps someone with more experience than I in dealing with MascotGuy could explain our position? --BlueSquadronRaven 22:58, 28 August 2006 (UTC)

It now appears that someone nominated the MascotGuy template for deletion on or around 22 September. They don't appear to have followed proper procedure, however, since I can't find any record of discussion of it on WP:TFD.     I'd made successful e-mail contact with this young man's mother a couple of years ago. Nice lady. She claims her son is autistic and she limits his time spent online due to the really nasty predators out there. She was also very sorry for his actions. I guess the family is editing off of a dynamic IP, so all we can do is tag and bag. I have a feeling that his infrequent appearances have to do with punishment. Has our favorite sockpuppet show, MascotGuy finally edited a user talk page? [4] (You have been temporarily blocked \rarr You have been temporarily busted) Here he's editing from an IP address, for either he forgot to create a new account or he ran out of names to call himself. What the heck could this mean? If anything, I suppose this confirms that he does read the messages sent to him after all.
