MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf is a 2004 Xbox video game developed by Day 1 Studios set in the BattleTech universe. It was a sequel to 2002's MechAssault. Notably it contains the hit song "Getting Away With Murder" by the popular rock band Papa Roach. The game is notable as allowing the player to control a variety of vehicles other than mechs. These vehicles include tanks, powered armor, and VTOLs. The game also allows the player to leave their vehicle and plant explosives. An interesting aspect of the game is the ability to "hitch" rides on friendly mechs and VTOLs, while wearing a powered armor. It is also possible to do the same to enemy mechs and attempt a 'neurohack', with the result of ejecting the pilot and taking over his mech if successful. The single-player campaign is divided into 20 missions, some harder than others, at 4 difficulty settings-(from easiest to hardest) Green, Regular, Veteran, and Elite.

[edit] Weapons

[1] 'Energy' Pulse Laser: Are not really powerful weapons, but what they lack there they gain in Firing Speed. They seem to be the fastest weapon in the game (especially when fully upgraded), but the lack of guidance means you'll need to trace the target. Adds some substantial heat as it's upgraded. Good against: Tanks, infantry, turrets, aircraft, structures, and Battle Armor. When fully upgraded: mechs (particularly light to medium ones), and the rest added in normal level.

Laser: Fire a long single beam. Have a limited homing capability increasing the odds of striking a moving target. Are able to do more damage than Pulse lasers and they also generate less heat than pulse lasers. Good against: Structures, some mechs, battle armor, tanks, and aircraft. Fully upgraded: anything but infantry and stand a chance with assault and heavy mechs.

Particle Projection Cannon (PPC): Fires a large blue glowing sphere. It travels slowly, but has extremely potent homing. This weapon must be charged up for a few seconds before firing. This weapon creates massive heat. Good against just about anything.

Plasma PPC: Found only on the Blood Asp and Star Adder mechs. Like the PPC, only it takes less time to charge and does slightly less damage. Good against just about anything.

Gravity Cannon (Railgun): Found only on the Rommel Mk II Tank. Fires a Gauss Rifle-like beam. Can zoom in by the player pressing X on the controller. In sniper mode, it is one of the only weapons capable of attacking the legs of a mech (which will knock it down). Good Against: Tanks, turrets, aircraft. When fully upgraded: mechs. To slow to be useful against the elusive infantry or the versitle Battle Armor & Elementals.

[edit] Multiplayer

MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf's multiplayer consists mainly of an OptiMatch feature where games of a certain type are shown. It also has a Conquest mode that was very popular at the beginning of the game's life but due to flaws in the design the Conquest mode quickly died down in popularity. Due to the high level of teamwork required, many clans enjoy competing on third party ladders such as Gamebattles.com.

Because multiplayer requires a high amount of teamwork, newer players may find the game very difficult to start playing if they are not on a good team. The VTOL is also an essential part of a good team, because it is required to quickly supply powerups to the Mechs on the team and keep them supplied while keeping them alive by supplying salvage.

[edit] Notes

A weapon(or mech) name in italics signifies it was not present in the previous MechAssault game.
