Londrina is a city in the state of Paraná in southern Brazil. It was founded around the 1920s by immigrants from São Paulo and Minas Gerais who arrived in Londrina towards 1904 and 1908. Named after Londres, London in Portuguese, by its British developers, who had been granted rights to the development of the region. George Craig Smith and Arthur Thomas were among the early developers of the city. Since then, Londrina has not stopped growing and developing its industrial, economic and educational area, fuelled originally by a the Brazilian coffee boom of the 1950s and 1960s. Londrina is the second largest city in the state of Paraná.

The city has a population of 495,696 (estimation IBGE, 2006), 739,195 (metropolitan area, estimation IBGE, 2005). It is a regional centre and is made up of commerce, services, agro-industries, and universities, including the State University of Londrina, UEL(Universidade Estadual de Londrina), which is famous for the quality of teaching and attracts students from all over the country.

Due to the large number of migrants, German, Japanese, Italian and other minority cultures can be found in the city, present in restaurants, culture and festivals.
