From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I think we need a project for American football generally as well as Wikipedia:WikiProject National Football League. I don't, however, have any idea about how to set up such a deal, so I'm just tossing stuff here for thoughts:
Contents |
[edit] Title
WikiProject on American football
[edit] Scope
This WikiProject aims primarily to organize and standardize the content of American football-related articles by promoting collaboration among the relevant editors. Current overview articles tend to duplicate scope while providing unclear or contradictory information. Depth regarding the mechanics and strategy of the game is frequently lacking. Overview consolidation combined with specific instance expansion should allow for a better reference that is more easily navigated and maintained.
[edit] Parentage
The parent of this WikiProject [will be] WikiProject Sports.
[edit] Descendant WikiProjects
No descendant WikiProjects have been named.
[edit] Similar WikiProjects
WikiProject NFL would probably qualify.
[edit] Participants
This is a list of Wikipedians who are committed to this WikiProject. Please, feel free to join by clicking edit on the right, and signing your name at the bottom of the list with three tildes (~~~). It's a little over the top for a scratch page in my user space, but hey, it's part of the suggested template.
[edit] Article Formats
These would need to be agreed on at a minimum:
- List Overviews (say, list of positions, which should probably give stub-level treatment to each position in addition to the bare list format)
- Game Concepts
- Player Positions
- Formations
[edit] To Do
Among other things, To Do includes setting up a proper to do list. Oh well.
[edit] Cleanup
A lot of articles (especially technical overview articles) are haphazard or just badly named:
- American football strategy has a lot of position-type stuff but not really much strategy
- Glossary of American football probably needs work, though I think it's a good central point
- American and Canadian football position names has more formation stuff than position stuff
- Defensive team and Offensive team should be redundant by this point
- American football defensive schemes has, again, a lot of duplicated content
- Lineman (football): again, too many list pages duplicating content
- Defensive back is a little over-broad, provided articles for the individual positions are made
- Defensive lineman and Offensive_lineman: ditto, plus these articles are fairly bad currently
- Special teams: this might fit better in the expansion list below, depending on level of specificity
- Formation (American football) looks like the best-laid-out starting point for this content
[edit] Missing
(As far as I know)
- Linebacker
- Fullback
- Center (football), plus a subarticle for long snappers?
- Guard (football)
- Tackle (Offensive and Defensive)
- Cornerback
- Punter
- Punt returner is linked, but may be too specific. Ditto for coverage team, gunner, and the like.
- Single-back formation
- maybe Single-wing formation and other older formations?
- List of American football penalties (note distinctions in NFL and NCAA)
[edit] Specific cleanup / expansion
As contrasted with the more general things above:
- Nose guard should probably be part of a defensive tackle article
- Defensive end
- End (football)
- Safety (football)
- Running back + halfback + tailback: one article should suffice. H-back should fit in here, too.
- Placekicker (should main article be at Kicker?)
- "46" defense
- Pro Set (probably needs a rename)
- Shotgun formation
- Wishbone formation

[edit] Infoboxes, Templates, etc
Some would probably be nice, yeah.
