Lok Ma Chau

Lok Ma Chau or Lokmachau (落馬洲) lies on the Hong Kong side of a border crossing between Hong Kong and Mainland China. It lies near San Tin in the northwest New Territories on the Hong Kong side, and is opposite to Huanggang in Shenzhen. The Sham Chun River separates Hong Kong from China at this crossing, and a large area of marshes exists within the Closed Area buffer zone on the Hong Kong side, to which access is restricted (click on the co-ordinates link above-right for an aerial view of these marshes).
This border crossing is one of three main vehicular crossings between Hong Kong and the Mainland, and is accessible to private cars, trucks, and public busses only (ie., no pedestrians or bicycles are permitted to cross at this point). This crossing is mainly used by freight trucks, and it is not uncommon for the crossing to become congested.
Several coach companies operate scheduled services between Shenzhen and Hong Kong that pass through the Lok Ma Chau crossing, departing from places such as Tsuen Wan and Wan Chai. A frequent service is also available locally between the Lok Ma Chau Bus Terminus, on Castle Peak Road, and Shenzhen. KMB bus routes 277, N277, N76, 76K, and 276B all service this interchange point.
Construction is currently underway on the KCR Lok Ma Chau Spur Line, which will connect the Lok Ma Chau border crossing with Sheung Shui, on the existing East Rail line. After its expected completion in mid 2007, the Lok Ma Chau station will connect to Shenzhen Metro's Huanggang station via a footbridge, complete with immigration facilites on either side.
