Locust Grove is a town in Mayes County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 1,366 at the 2000 census.

Locust Grove is located at 36°11′50″N, 95°10′1″W (36.197290, -95.166993)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.2 km² (0.9 mi²), all land.

As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 1,366 people, 519 households, and 363 families residing in the town. The population density was 620.5/km² (1,606.7/mi²). There were 567 housing units at an average density of 257.6/km² (666.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 57.32% White, 32.50% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.81% from other races, and 9.15% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.42% of the population.

There were 519 households out of which 38.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.4% were married couples living together, 17.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.9% were non-families. 26.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.14.

In the town the population was spread out with 32.1% under the age of 18, 12.2% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 16.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 29 years. For every 100 females there were 90.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 80.9 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $20,655, and the median income for a family was $24,821. Males had a median income of $25,500 versus $16,389 for females. The per capita income for the town was $9,191. About 22.1% of families and 23.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.8% of those under age 18 and 19.5% of those age 65 or over.

In 1977, this small rural community received national attention as the location of the Oklahoma Girl Scout Murders, in which three young girls were raped and murdered as they were camping at the nearby Camp Scott. Gene Leroy Hart was arrested for the crime but never proved guilty. The case remains open.

Locust Grove is the home town of the noted Web author Jeff Rowland, who now works in Massachusetts.
