The LMHOSTS (LAN Manager Hosts) file is used to enable domain name resolution when other methods, e.g. WINS, fail.

The file located at C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\, if exists, is read as the LMHOSTS setting file. A sample file is located at C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\lmhosts.sam. The sample file contains documentation for manually configuring the file.
