[edit] How to use

For Graham Greene (born October 2, 1904, died April 3, 1991):

  • {{subst:lived|b=1904|d=1991|key=Greene, Graham}}

Another way to add the categories, is template:lifetime:

  • {{subst:lifetime|1904|1991|Greene, Graham}}

Note that both of these templates should be substituted.

[edit] When NOT to use

If there is not a date of death, do not use this template. As this will create Category:Deaths with no year If attribute "d" is left empty.

This will create a category "red link" at the bottom of the page, which may lead to its arbitrary creation and consequent Cfd listing.

It doesn't have to be listed on CFD - anyone can remove a category from an article, whereas CFD is to remove a category completely. violet/riga (t) 23:15, 9 July 2005 (UTC)
See Gillo Pontecorvo revision source. The template with attribute "d" empty, creates the category at the bottom. Then if a user decides to click on the "red link" and create the category, it becomes a Cfd problem. <>Who?¿? 23:25, 9 July 2005 (UTC)
I see what you're saying now - only if that category is created is it a CFD matter. violet/riga (t) 23:28, 9 July 2005 (UTC)
You're right, I should have been more explicit and describe the symptoms. I rewrote the above. Thanks. <>Who?¿? 23:33, 9 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Comments

[edit] template:lifespan

There probably should not be a listing for template:lifespan in the "How to use" section. It encourages users to use a template that redirects to template:lifetime. It would be preferable if they only use template:lifetime. If it is a problem with naming, then it should be renamed, rather than listing both of them. I suggest removing it from the documentation. Thank you. <>Who?¿? 07:02, 10 July 2005 (UTC)

Suggest listing it as (Use: {{lifetime}}, but not {{lifespan}} which redirects), as mentioned by Docu, in another conversation. <>Who?¿? 07:09, 10 July 2005 (UTC)
My suggestion was mainly for templates that aren't used with "subst:". For this one, I would offer all reasonable choices as finally just the categories, not the template is being added to the article. -- User:Docu
I appologize for mis-interpretting your suggestion. I understand offering different choices, and I too actually prefer {{lifespan}} over the other. Although it is just a redirect, I don't think there should be two options, as this would just encourage mis-use in other situations. If a template is named "A", editors should use "A" and not "B", just because that can. Just my opinion. Thanks. <>Who?¿? 02:44, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
