Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) is a university in Liverpool, United Kingdom. It is named after John Moores and was previously called Liverpool Polytechnic. It is not to be confused with the University of Liverpool or Liverpool Hope University, which are separate institutions also based in Liverpool.
Based primarily on three campuses, the university has nearly 23,000 [1] students including a large number of foreign students. These students are represented by the Liverpool Students' Union. This has a magazine called Havoc and a radio station called Shout FM.
LJMU often hosts guest lectures, with past speakers including His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Steven Spielberg, Phil Redmond and Alastair Campbell.
LJMU has significant industrial links, with degree programmes have been developed with leading companies including Ford, IBM, Lucas industries and Jaguar. First Destination Survey results show that 94% of LJMU graduates are in employment or undertaking postgraduate study within six months of graduating.
Through recent TQA assessments, LJMU is top of the league for teaching in physics and astronomy, applied social work, health studies, hospitality, leisure, recreation, sport and tourism, and has consistently received good ratings for its many other subject areas. LJMU is also the UK’s top university for teaching and research in Sports and Exercise Sciences. [2]
In 1999, Liverpool John Moores University Mens Rugby League Team were crowned Student Rugby League European Champions following a 20-14 victory over University of Bordeaux at I.M. Marsh Campus, Liverpool. This completed a famous treble after they lifted the SRL National League and SRL Premiership.
Recently the John Moores Alumni Association created an Alumni Board and an Alumni Business Network Group.
