Live Phish Vol. 17 was recorded live at Portland Meadows in Portland, Oregon, on July 15, 1998.
This was the first concert on the band's 1998 summer tour. Much like Live Phish Volume 5 and Live Phish Volume 8, the album was released to mixed reviews, as many fans felt that there were many more exceptional shows from the 1998 summer tour to choose from, a tour considered by many as one of the band's best ever.
The bonus track is a very popular version of "Bathtub Gin" recorded live at the Riverport Amphitheater in Maryland Heights, Missouri, a suburb of St. Louis.
