The anime FLCL features numerous visual styles, which it often does without any warning. Minus the general anime style itself, this list of visual effects in FLCL lists the various effects used throughout the series, organized by episode.

[edit] Fooly Cooly

  • Bullet time - Used here to a ridiculous end; Haruko kisses Naota in slow motion while Mamimi looks on, horrified.

A black and white moment.
  • Black and white - There are several quick moments done in black and white, during one of which Mamimi takes a picture. Interestingly, unlike bullet time (above) and manga style (below), the black and white moments are not experienced as black and white by the characters - Mamimi's picture comes out in color.
  • Manga - An elaborate style used twice in the series (once in this episode, and again in "FLCLimax"), the series cuts to the style of a manga volume - black and white pictures, in boxes, on a page. This is accompanied on both occasions by much yelling.
  • Picture in picture - Immeadiately after the bullet time sequence (see above) the storyline becomes a little picture in the corner of the viewer's television screen, while the rest of the screen cuts to grainy footage of what appears to be the inside of a bus. Haruko and Mamimi are lazily discussing the difficulties of moving really slowly. Naota, who is also in the bus, is surprised to hear this, having been under the impression that it was done with computers later on (he was unconscious during the sequence).
