Talk:List of tallest mountains by country

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Can this list be checked? I already found 2 critical errors and I'm not well-versed in mountains. Here are basic things to check:

  • The mountain in question is indeed in the country indicated
  • The mountain in question really has the height in question
  • The highest peak in the country in question is really the height claimed in the article

I think this list was derived from List of countries by highest point. See the references there. It was originally derived from a very poorly researched CIA list. I corrected many errors, but there may be more; new errors are still coming to light. The Israel and Uruguay information was not incorrect, but it was incorrectly linked. I have corrected it. I thank Alexdan loghin for contributing some missing countries, but I cannot accept his Greenland edit, which is unsourced and disputed by a recent GPS measurement by an experienced hiker and GPS user, and I definitely cannot accept his Bangladesh edit. Despite claims by some ill informed websites, Russian topographic mapping and SRTM data agree that Keokradong is under 900 metres. Viewfinder 21:29, 8 October 2006 (UTC)

Mount McKinley is the highest mountain in the United States, not the tallest. Mauna Kea is the tallest. Kobain 21:30, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

The list defines "tallest" as height above sea level. Perhaps it should be reworded. Any comments? Viewfinder 22:53, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
