Talk:List of ships complement of HMS Hydra (A144)
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dear Graeme Leggatt,
Thanks for moving this section with the appropriate link. I'd be grateful if you would amend the heading so that it is both accurate and grammatical - it should of course read ".... ship's officers ...." (apostrophe and corrected typo). I am familiar with my being able to amend text but have no idea how to amend the article heading!
For reasons I am sure you understand, I wonder whether you would be happy with this page being, indeed, made "List of ship's company of HMS Hydra (A144)", with the inclusion of the deleted list of senior and junior ratings?
For reasons I mentioned elsewhere, this would be a useful addition to information available online. This would indeed be unusual insofar as nowhere else, to my knowledge, is there such a full and complete list of any ship's company of any ship online. Almost no one else could compile one, except for a ship at sea right now (and that would not be appropriate, for obvious reasons). It is highly unusual that such accurate records are available and there will be few like me willing to spend their time on this matter anyway. So, it's not likely that this would open the 'flood gates'!
Thus, such a breakdown would be of interest to historians and to those who want to know more about the Navy or a survey ship or, indeed, the Falklands War. To be sure, of course, this information will be of special interest in 2007, as the 25th anniversary of the Falklands War falls in April to June, with a variety of commemorative events in June.
Unlike army regiments and corps, with their bases and regimental associations throughout the country, the Royal Navy is such that its people soon lose touch after leaving the ship, let alone the Service (especially so in the days before Email). Ships paid off and become razor blades and there is no sustaining link for any ship, except where an association is run by volunteers (and the quality of these associations varies enormously). Thus, this list of names will be of special value in 2007 and help enormously the volunteers trying to bring people together. I would much value your consideration of this matter.
