Talk:List of psychedelic rock artists

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I'd like to propose including "The Windmills of Your Mind" (music by Michel Legrand, words by Alan and Marilyn Bergman, from the 1968 film "The Thomas Crown Affair") in the original version sung by Noel Harrison as a central text of the psychedelic canon. Julian 10:52, Dec 31, 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Suggested standards

[edit] Coverage

  • List at least one work for each artist in the list.
  • If an LP/CD is listed, list one or two paradigmatic psychedelic songs under it.
  • Don't try to be exhaustive:
    • List all the artist's LPs/CDs that contain noteworthy psychedelic material.
    • List only one or two songs per LP/CD.
    • List only one or two singles not on an LP/CD.
  • Don't list live material, unless it includes notable psychedelic material not available elsewhere.
  • List individual people under a band's entry only if the individual released original psychedelic material as a solo artist, and just reference the entry for that artist (which should exist or be added).

[edit] Format

For each artist's list entry, list in this order:

  • Sub-artist references, if applicable (see above)
    • list in alphabetical order
    • no need to flag it "(artist)", since the name isn't italicized or in quotes
  • LPs/CDs
    • list in chronological order
    • italicize name
      • no need to flag it as "(LP)" or "(CD)", since nothing else should be italicized
    • follow name with date in parentheses
    • sub-list one or two tracks on it that best represent psychedelic music
      • list in order of the track list, or in alphabetical order?
  • Singles not on an LP/CD
    • list in chronological order
    • put name in quotes
      • no need to flag it "(single)", since nothing else should be in quotes
    • follow name with date in parentheses

[edit] Fictitious example

  • The Dorks
    • See Joey Dork
    • See Larry Dork
    • Acid Rock (1967)
      • "Dream of the Anchorite"
      • "Have Another Tab"
    • Melted Brain (1968)
      • "Too Much Acid"
      • "Trip to Berkeley"
    • Flashback (2002)
      • "Still Dreamin' them Dreamz"
      • "Way Too Much Acid"
    • "Too Groovy" (1966)
    • "Wow Man" (1969)

[edit] Responses

That looks like a great plan, [[B.Bryant. The same format should be used on all lists of musicians by genre. -Willmcw 01:09, Mar 18, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Spacemen 3/Mercury Rev

Hopefully all will agree that I have corrected a grievous omission by adding links to Spacemen 3 and Mercury Rev. It seems like it would be required in a list that includes The Flaming Lips (Fridmann connection) and Spiritualized (is Sonic Boom chopped liver?).

I would not be offended if the Mercury Rev paradigmatic works were narrowed down to a couple of picks: Definintely 'Yerself Is Steam' track 'Sleepy River' belongs there, but the titular track on 'All Is Dream' as well as the albums 'BOCES' and 'See You on the Other Side' were all very influential in psych music. While all of their work is at least in some way psychedelic, it would be redundant to list it all as the complete discography has already been posted.

On the paradigmatic work of Spacemen 3: Perhaps the Red Crayola cover on Perfect Prescription 'Transparent Radiation'?

[edit] Comprehensive...

Shouldn't this list include everything from the psychedelic music article? Could be a nice task for someone in the mood for some mindless work. --demonburrito 18:16, 3 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Bloated?

This list seems really bloated to me, and hard to navigate. I'm not an expert on the genre or this page, but it seems to me it would be easier to use if it included only the names of the artists. Any other organization scheme, such as splitting off articles by section of the alphabet, would be handy as well. Katr67 22:52, 25 November 2006 (UTC)
