Talk:List of people from Minnesota
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I am proposing that List of famous Minnesotans be merged into List of people from Minnesota. The reasons for this:
- Compare Wikipedia searches for list of famous and list of people from and you will see that the latter is preferred when referencing people of a given region, especially other states. Consistency is important.
- A list of people is less restrictive than a list of famous so there will be less question about who may and may not be included on the page. Any Minnesotan notable enough to be included in Wikipedia is notable enough to be included in List of people from Minnesota. Generally, only celebrities, politicians, and important historical figures are truly "famous", and I don't think others should be excluded based on that.
- International readers are less likely to be familiar with the term Minnesotans may not instantly recognize that these are people from Minnesota. With the title "people from Minnesota", it's unmistakable. Even if they've never heard of Minnesota, they can tell that we're talking about people all from the same place.

[edit] Half done
I merged List of famous Minnesotans into List of people from Minnesota.
- I decided to go with an alphabetized list rather than a categorized list because:
- A lot of people are notable in more than one area, and there were a number of people who were listed more than once.
- It's easier to add someone alphabetically than to decide what categor(y|ies) they should fall into.
- It's easier to find someone by last name than by guessing what they might be listed under.
- The disadvantage of an alphabetized list is that it's not easy, for example, to see all the Supreme Court justices from Minnesota at a glance. However, if there are enough Minnesotans in a given group, they should probably be put in a list or category like Supreme Court justices from Minnesota.
- I worked through sections A through G to put in birth and death dates and to remove people who clearly aren't important Minnesotans. I removed a number of redlinked names and removed some non-natives who didn't do much of note while living in Minnesota. Please help me complete H through Z!
- In my opinion a great deal of the athletes should be removed from this list, but I'm not familiar enough with the sports to know who should stay and who should go. Probably all of the non-natives and most of the less-notable natives. I think these people should be listed on pages such as List of Minnesota Vikings players or in a relevant category. If someone else could help out with that, that'd be great.
- Due to the large number of people on the list, I decided that the most important or influential ones should be somehow marked, so I bolded their names. I'm not sure what criteria should be used for deciding who deserves to be bolded, but I chose those whom I knew to be internationally famous or very important in their field.
