Talk:List of flops in entertainment
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- This article incorporates content from List of commercial failures, formerly List of major flops.
Port Charles was not a "flop." It ran for six years. Mike H 06:46, Apr 23, 2005 (UTC) Same with Law & Order: Criminal Intent.
[edit] Article Split
I searched through Wikipedia, trying to find a list of failed television series... after repeated attempts, I gave up and started my own. It was only after I started the feature that I managed to find this more general article about flops in entertainment. Would it be acceptable for the article I started to remain in place? It would probably be easier for Wiki users to find if they were searching specifically for failures in television and not other facets of pop culture. --M.Neko 12:46, 20 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Star Wars Holiday Special
Would fit in very well!
[edit] Guidelines for inclusion
We should start setting up some basic guidelines for this article. Here are my suggestions.
- Every item submitted should have between one to three sentences describing why it's a flop.
- Not every television show that gets canceled in it's first season is a flop, TV shows get canceled all the time. Only ones that are especially bad, especially hyped, or have just plain odd or mitigating circumstances should be listed.

I agree wholeheartedly. I am creating a short description for all entries present. I am looking at all the redlinked articles to see if they warrant inclusion.
For instance, I have removed the Judy Garland Show, as "it was the biggest talent deal in TV history." The television series was critically praised, but, for a variety of reasons, lasted only one season, and went off the air in 1964, after 26 episodes." To me, that's not a flop, just unfortunate.

[edit] MC Hammer gangsta rap?
MC Hammer put at least one song prasing God on every album, and now he's a minister. I suspect some subtle Wiki vandalism here, but I figured I'd mention it and see if I missed something. --Closeapple 07:54, 20 November 2005 (UTC)
- Biased statement considering that his gangsta album was certified gold and had the popular single. --70.129.7.136 09:41, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] The Tomorrow People
- The Tomorrow People A remake of ITV's Doctor Who-rivalling science fiction series. It failed because it lacked everything that made the original series famous (and beloved): the title music, title sequences, "TIM" the computer, and so on. It was cancelled, surprisingly, after four series (in spite of disastrous ratings throughout the run).
- Does this really warrant inclusion? It may have rated poorly, but I certainly wouldn't say four series was a flop (running from 1992 to 1995). I'd say this should be removed. BillyH 01:59, 28 November 2005 (UTC)
- I agree, 4 series doesn't sound like a flop to me. If it were a flop, I'm sure it would have been cancelled earlier. I know it might not be very NPOV, but for many people when you say The Tomorrow People, they think of this remake and think, 'yep, good show'. Compared to the original it might not have done too well or been too good, but for a stand alone children's programme, I think it did pretty well...well enough not to be included here anyway. So I support it's removal from this page. Evil Eye 19:35, 18 December 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Dance of the Vampires
Does a run of "only" 56 performances really qualify as a major flop? Jon Rob 15:02, 6 January 2006 (UTC)
[edit] David Lee Roth??
The statement about David Lee Roth has been removed because not only does it not have a source but it is also not important in the article. Why would one point out David Lee Roth as a singer with flops in his career when there are numerous other examples as well? By doing so it promotes an agenda while a more general statement about flops in music would be more appropriat.--70.129.7.136 09:41, 12 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Sophie Ellis-Bextor's Shoot From The Hip
I removed this entry, not only did I not find any evidence this album was such a great flop it'd qualify here (it had 2 top10 singles, that's not too shabby), the entry itself did not give any justification either, it just stated ït was a flop". --Lomedae 17:47, 29 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Suggestion for the UPN network inclusion
After some consideration, I would like to hear from other editors about including the UPN network under "television flops". As far as I can recall, the majority of its programming was critically panned and the network itself was consistently last in overall ratings. With the introduction of the CW Network on WB affliates, UPN stations will be left to be independant stations or members of My Network TV network.--Kenn Caesius 22:04, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
- I believe The WB rates lower than UPN. Seeing as both are merging perhaps include both? - Mike Beckham 23:37, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Kerry Packer
"Australia's Naughtiest Home Videos - Supposed to be a spinoff of Australia's Funniest Home Video Show, but cancelled during its first episode by the explicit order of Nine Network owner Kerry Packer as he watched at home, due to the program's risque content." — was that the same show in which, during its screening, Kerry Packer rang up the producers of the show and shouted "Get that shit off the air!"? Rintrah 09:52, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
- Yep. I followed the link. Rintrah 09:55, 13 September 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Survivor
What about the UK version of Survivor as there is no mention of it, the series I remember the massive hype surrounding the show and had rating that was lower than Big Brother, which is embarassing for a ITV show against its Channel 4 rival as which the latter usually have lower prime time rating to the former, ITV only killed the show off after the sucess of its celebrity offshoot, I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!. Also the ITV reality TV show presented by Ulrika Jonsson, Mr. Right would be a good mention. Willirennen 19.41 1 December 2006 (utc)
[edit] Explaination for OR warning
In light of other articles of similiar content like Films considered the worst ever and List of commercial failures in computer and video gaming undergoing major editting and persistant monitoring, I have added the Original Research warning in hopes that major editors monitoring this article will begin to bring it inline with wikipedias standards. I am sure it is only matter of time before this article will be nominated for deletion or most all its text deleleted for not providing references.--Kenn Caesius 17:34, 7 December 2006 (UTC)
