Talk:List of edible fish

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Recently I added the category name category:lists of foods to the page List of fish common names, but I did recognise the fact that many of the fish there are unedible. The best course of action I thought would be to duplicate this list into a new page "List of edible fish", and start stripping away the unedible ones from this new list. However as I am not an expert on this subject, and in fact English is not even my native language (I am Dutch) I don't think I am the best qualified person to do this, I might remove entry's of perfectly edible fish just because they have an uncommon name.

However, a list of edible fish would really be usefull so I just went ahead and started this page.

I did allready remove the category category:lists of foods from the List of fish common names page.

I think this is the wrong approach - for one thing, nearly all species of fish are edible, if you're hungry enough. :-) For another, until this list is edited down correctly, we may be in the position of recommending poisonous types to people, not good for one's reputation! FishBase distinguishes types as "commercial", "minor commercial" and "gamefish", which is better than the very subjective and incomplete "fish that taste good". Stan 18:16, 15 Oct 2004 (UTC)
Yes I agree, so after some trepidation I took the step of removing all the species except for the few I was reasonably certain of they are sold en masse as food, or at least are well known to be edible (like the snook for example). I am certain I made many mistakes in removing species that should be on this list, and perhaps I did not remove some that seem edible but really are not ( the "silver carp" for example) but I am certain that the result is better than just keeping the full list. Seems to me a lot of information is getting doubled up or entered in one place but not the other, between this page and List of types of seafood seems they should either be merged or a redirect made or something along those lines... Number36 07:18, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Goldfish?

Can goldfish be added to the list? The article says that though edible, goldfish are rarely eaten. --Gray Porpoise 18:46, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
