Talk:List of dictators/December 4 culling
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
José Eduardo dos Santos does not appear to have subverted the rule of law, or to hold any absolute power, nor is he widely described as a dictator. (He came to power legally, and has stood for election multiple times.) Anyone know otherwise? jucifer 02:22, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
Ditto Laureano Gómez Ditto Manuel Isidoro Belzu jucifer 02:49, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
dos Santos ruled a one-party state from 1979 to the early 1990s, necessarily cracking down on person's name and the opposition because of the UNITA insurgency. Belzu is regarded in several pro-Spanish or conservative sources as a dangerous demagogue or an early Trotsky who hounded the oligarchy. I have seen Gómez mentioned several times as a dictator, but unfortunately do not have exact citations right in front of me. If you can, check Google Print for the word "dictator". There are usually several sources. Note: dos Santos only faced a competitive election once, in 1992. —Sesel 02:57, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
Ditto Rafael Núñez jucifer 03:14, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
Ditto Ramon Castilla
Ditto René Barrientos
Barrientos: mentioned p. 136 (ISBN 0853459916). Came to power in military coup, overthrowing elected government (1964). Widely accused of ruling country for mining interests. Catavi massacre (1967). Ordered extrajudicial execution of Che Guevara (1967). Killed as helicopter hit a telephone wire (1969); foul play suspected.
Castilla and Núñez were caudillos, a Spanish term for strong rulers who held extensive power, even if crimes and repression were not widespread. They ruled in times when dictatorship was not particularly stigmatized. —Sesel 03:50, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
OK, put in the notes then, I'm too tired now. jucifer 03:56, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
- I removed Castilla, Nunez, Belzu and Gomez, feel free to all them back in if they can be sourced. jucifer 15:33, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
Aliyev and Phomvihane, if anyone disagrees add 'em back in. jucifer 23:48, 4 December 2005 (UTC)
