Shouldn't dAv5 be added? :-)

The top of the page has a link to Castles in the United Kingdom. At the bottom are links to Castles in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Do we need separate links?

Does "Hearst Castle" in California count as a castle?  :-) -- Zoe What about the Chateau Frontenac? Archtemplar 06:12, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

Hi Zoe, you should ask the person who made the last three edits. His IP starts with 65....

I have deleted the link above since, as you correctly pointed out, it is superfluous. Renata 08:53 Dec 14, 2002 (UTC)

I'm going to remove that image from this page, for two reasons:

1 This is just a list page, so doesn't really need an image on it

2 No offense, but of all the Images of castles we could pick to decorate this page, that is not a very good one since it has some random geezer sat in foreground!

--Nojer2 09:47, 24 Jun 2004 (UTC)

Hey, watch your language, that was me in 1968, sat on the fence in front of the castle, and I don't like being called random ;-). No seriously, I agree that pics in lists don't look right so I support your removal of my pic. One day it can go in the yet-to-be-written Castle of Chillon article, Best Wishes, Adrian "Geezer" Pingstone - Adrian Pingstone 17:43, 24 Jun 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Castles of Japan

I noticed that sometime ago somebody edited out the list of japanese castles. Is there a reason for this? It seems strange, especially since most of the linked castles actually have wikipedia pages for them.

  • Probably a vandal. Go ahead and add them back in if they're not all redlinks. Wikibofh(talk) 22:38, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Castles of Austria

what about to delete some of the Castles of Austria. I think this is not a list of all castles in the world - just the important ones should be here.

why shouldn't it be a list of all of them? as long as they're actually castles, and not tree-forts, leave it in. Archtemplar 06:12, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

because every European country has the same number of castles and listing all - this list would be 100 m long. I think there should be only that castles, that have a site in wikipedia.
I think the point here is to create a list and later EXPAND the articles (or create some) for those castles that need more information. Rarelibra 16:23, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Format of this page

The format of this page is a little cofusing to me:

  1. Most of the links are red; is that really useful? Can new articles be made from all of those red links? I don't know, I'm not a castle expert.
  2. For some of the entries, the castle and location name are both linked, for others just the castle title is linked, and for yet others, there is no link at all.
  3. Why are some of the castles in bold?
  4. Why did the author decide to put in a huge number of castles, but not put all of them in (see the Germany Castles section)?

I hope the author comes back to look at this discussion page. J. Finkelstein 05:44, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

I was just wondering about the bold names as well... If someone can't provide a good reason, I suggest we make them all normal. As for the other good points you bring up... does anyone have an idea? romarin [talk ] 00:39, 24 June 2006 (UTC)
This whole article (List) is completely out of hand.

Recommendation: For all countries with more than 10 entries, make a separate "List of castles in ...." and provide a link to it, For many countries there is already such a list, see List of castles in Poland. Why should all these castles, many only in red, be duplicated?

Syrenab 16:04, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

I have started doing this - the lists of about 15 countries moved out so far.
I don't know whether it's sensible to include links to some high-profile castles directly on this page, as well as linking the country-specific pages. For example, Neuschwanstein or Windsor Castle, perhaps? --David Edgar 12:04, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
Examples will only cause argument into which one is more recognized or popular. I think the rule of keeping the list for <10 and putting links for >10 is perfect. David - you're doing a great job, thank you for your work! Rarelibra 13:44, 8 November 2006 (UTC)
Thanks! OK, I've followed this approach. Some remaining issues:
  • Some sections (eg. Denmark, India) have additional castles which still may need to be merged into the country-specific pages or listed elsewhere.
Denmark is no longer an issue. I moved the few entries in this list over to the main article. Good effort to clean up the list! --SFDan 12:50, 9 November 2006 (UTC)
  • Talk:List of castles in Poland contains a long list which need to be merged into List of castles in Poland (ideally by someone who knows the country or the language).
  • Some titles (eg. "Castles of Lithuania") link to the country name, others (eg. "Castles of Latvia") don't.
  • Some pre-existing sub-pages don't follow the standard naming (eg. Castles of Transylvania). (This doesn't necessarily matter; in some cases it even makes sense because of the lack of distinction between castles, palaces and forts.)
--David Edgar 12:26, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

I'm thinking that Castles of Transylvania need to go under Castles of Romania (since it is a sub) ? Rarelibra 13:44, 9 November 2006 (UTC)

I merged Castles of Transylvania into List of castles in Romania, as it only had two different castles listed. Transylvania section now removed from this page. ::Supergolden:: 11:37, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
Good work going on here! Shouldn't all the sections be 'Castles in X', rather than 'Castles of X', in line with WP standard (see Category:Castles by country). I suppose that means moving all the 'of' subpages too at some point... Would it make sense to group the country sections by continent? ::Supergolden:: 11:29, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
Good point - I changed the section titles. But I haven't changed any 'of' subpages yet. Agree on Transylvania / Romania - the merge is good.
I think we need a Category:Lists of castles for all the subpages now - it would be a subcategory of Category:Lists of structures, I suppose. --David Edgar 12:35, 13 November 2006 (UTC)
I created and populated this category (Category:Lists of castles). It should be useful in quickly identifying pages with non-standard titles. --David Edgar 12:27, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
Good work, I had a look over and moved Castles of Armenia, Castles of Austria, List of castles of Belarus, and Castles of South Tyrol to 'in' names and fixed back links from here. Think that's it. ::Supergolden:: 13:45, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Croatia

We don't appear to have any castles in Croatia at all. But there's a whole list on this German page. --David Edgar 19:16, 17 November 2006 (UTC)

We're going to run into such cases where we can research and borrow off the other wikis. Rarelibra 20:25, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
