[edit] Walt Disney Home Entertainment expansion

It appears that there is suggestion to expand the Walt Disney Home Entertainment article. As a Disney buff myself, I have done some contributions, but it seems that it still is pretty small. Can you please find some very useful Disney video research, so far, me and Ryanasaurus0077 are tyring to expand with more info. --Imax80 21:37, 27 November 2006 (UTC)

I already have some research, but I need to find enough time to put it in. I'm hoping to finish the rough text of the Walt Disney Classics article before spending much time on this one. I don't like the list being there. I think it should be moved to List of Walt Disney video releases or something like that. It should still be only "notable" releases, but someone has to give guidelines for what is notable and what is not. Maybe there should be headings for each year and tables might be better than the current format. I'll post a message over there. Canadiana 22:57, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
Tregoweth, Canadiana and I aren't too keen about that "List of Notable WDHV Releases" even though I might have been the one who started it. Canadiana was considering moving it to another article that we could link to WDHE. Do you think that would work out? Because Disney marketed tons of cassettes and DVDs, and videodiscs. Let me know about your opinion. --Imax80 00:25, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
A list of notable WDHV releases might be seen as merely duplicating List of notable Disney feature films -- and, as you said, Disney's released a ton of stuff, and every compilation doesn't need to be listed. :) Something like "List of notable Disney videos," focusing on non-feature films, might be okay.
Also, in the main WDHV article, a section listing the most important or major releases would probably be okay -- first videotape release, first DVD release, first sellthrough-priced release, etc. —tregoweth (talk) 02:48, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
There is already a List of Disney direct-to-video films which is more-or-less duplicated in List of notable Disney feature films. We certainly don't want to duplicate that again.
There could be a list in the main article, but my comments in Talk:Walt Disney Home Entertainment mainly still apply. I think the list is already too big, so some things need to be deleted and others added. I prefer to mention the first videotape, DVD, etc. in the article. I not sure it's such a good idea to list them again in another section of the article, unless it's an extremely short list. If there is to be such a list, maybe it needs to say why each title is noteworthy. Canadiana 04:01, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Well, the only feature never released on video or DVD here in the US was Song of the South. So a list of notable WDHV releases could be appropriate if we did up to around 1989 or 1990, considering that not too many Disney titles are on video. By the 1990s, there were the direct-to-video/DVD movies. I think we should have a decent list, I might show my example on Walt Disney Home Entertainment today and see what you think. I may not do it, I'll see, and you can revert it if you want. --Imax80 23:24, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

Well I started List of Walt Disney video releases. It's not done, I was experimenting, I was testing a list. I want to see some opinions on it. --Imax80 22:57, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
I made a few changes to your intro. I fixed some of the links to formats, added DVD and CD Video, and deleted HD DVD. Disney has not released any titles on HD DVD and as far as I know they currently have no official plans to do so.
I don't know if the DiscoVision titles should go in that list. They weren't listed as Walt Disney Home Video and the guy with the DiscoVision web site says that Disney says that they don't exist.
I'm pretty sure there is no such thing as a "Fotomat" release. It's just a regular Disney release that happened to be rented through Fotomat. I'm not even sure that Fotomat was the only company selling these at the time, although it is possible they were the only ones renting them at first. The dates have to be year, month, day (yyyy-mm-dd, biggest to smallest unit) with zeros at the beginning of any numbers less than ten. Canadiana 06:03, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Proposal from Talk:Walt Disney Home Entertainment

I don't like having the list of notable releases in the Walt Disney Home Entertainment article. I think it would be better in its own article. The problem is that the list is bigger than the article already and it is probably getting bigger.

I think it should be moved to List of Walt Disney video releases or something like that. It should still be only "notable" releases, but someone has to give guidelines for what is notable and what is not. (Page titles are not supposed to say "notable" even when the list is partial.)

Tables might be better than the current format. What do you think of this style (columns can be sorted by clicking the little arrows):

Notable Disney video releases
Stock # Title Date
10 Pete's Dragon 1980-03-04
47 Herbie Rides Again 1982-10-15 and 1986-05-28
Parent Trap!, The 1984
96 Fun and Fancy Free 1982-12-26 and 1984
91 Three Caballeros, The 1989-09-28
Walt Disney Comedy and Magic Revue, The 1985-12-01
40 Disney Christmas Gift, A 1985-12-01
499 Flight of the Navigator 1987-01-27

Unfortunately, we have to put the dates like that if we want to sort by them. Full dates sort alphabetically. The only other date format the sorted can use is 26/12/2006 (dd/mm/yyyy) or 26/12/06 (dd/mm/yy). In this case, the re-releases would have to be in a fourth column. Actually, re-releases and note would be a good fourth column I think. Canadiana 00:10, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

That is somewhat a very good idea. I am not to keen about "The" being after the actual title, or the release reading like this "85-12-01." This is what I am thinking of.
Notable Disney Video Releases
Stock # Title Date
10 Pete's Dragon March 4, 1980
11 The Black Hole March 4, 1980
What do you think of this as in idea? --Imax80 00:20, 28 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Questions to comment on

There are several questions to answer:

  1. Should the list be moved? I've been thinking about it since the list started and I think definitely yes.
  2. What to call the new article? The title I suggested seems the the existing ones in lists of films. There are several Disney lists already.
  3. Should it be in a table? It makes it a little harder to edit, but definitely easier to read.
  4. Should the table be sortable? I like the sortable feature, which is new this week on Wikipedia. This way you could list by stock number (good for verifying), by title (easier to find the title you're looking for), or by date (to see the order the videos came out).
  5. How to format the stock number? Could be minimum 3 digits (like 010, etc.) or no leading zeros. The sorting works the same either way.
  6. How to format the titles? We could leave them with "A" and "The" at the beginning, except that people expect titles in order to be listed by the second word if the title starts with "A" or "The". I just tried listing with "The" at the end, but I don't care either way.
  7. How to format the dates? This is the big problem. I would like the dates to be spelled out like you did it, but that makes sorting by date fairly useless. It would start with "April 1" of the earliest year, then April 1 of other years, then the same with April 11 to 19, then April 2, and so on to the end of April. After April comes August (because it's in alphabetical order), then December, then February, etc. Wikifying the dates is another possibility, but sorting will only work for people who have date preferences set in a certain way.
  8. Lastly, what makes a video release notable? We don't want to list every Disney video ever. It would be much too big a list. We need to be able to give potential editors some kind of guideline as to what belongs and what doesn't. See Wikipedia:Notability (films) (and its talk page) for an example of an attempt to define notability.

We could just do up to a certain year if that's okay. I think the table short be sorted. --Imax80 00:02, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
