However, his mother's maiden name was Azevedo, which is traditionally Sephardic. "Its Sephardic associations have suggested that Borges had Jewish ancestry, something that he has ambiguously both 'regretfully denied' and acknowledged [on a later occasion]" to quote Fishburn & Hughes' "A DICTIONARY OF BORGES"
