[edit] Ordering
I think this page is in bad need of ordering. The names are here without rhyme or reason, and for clarity should probably be best broken down in some manner, whether alphabetically or by profession (my preference). Anyone else have an idea on this?--Mitsukai 13:05, 23 September 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Confusion
There's a difference between a person of Hispanic descent and a person of Spanish descent --- this list is suppose to be a list of Hispanic but yet, the vast majority are people from Spain What's going on? 72.144.68.229 09:07, 27 December 2005 (UTC)
- I'm going to have to agree with this. Spaniards and Portuguese (or any European residents of either descent) aren't considered hispanic, per se. Those that are, are traditionally considered within the western hemisphere of SP/PO descent. I don't know, personally, if people of said lineage who emigrate outside of Europe but within the eastern hemisphere (example: Australia) would be considered hispanic per se (I'd think not, as Hispaniola is in the Carribean). Anyone else got an opinion on this?--Mitsukai 14:38, 27 December 2005 (UTC)

- Even better than an opinion, a fact: Between 3 BC and 2 BC the Romans conquered the Iberian Peninsula and they named it HISPANIA. Since then, a Spaniard is, per se, an Hispanic. If 72.144.68.229 or anyone else feels that there are "too many" spaniards in this list, he/she should collaborate by adding more non-Spanish notable Hispanics. And by the way, Catalans are also Spaniards (just see Catalonia article). --Zaqarbal 16:40, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, I'm quite aware that Iberia was once named Hispania. However, the term for Hispanic tends to originate more from the use of "Hispaniola" than "Hispania". I think we're better off looking for something that gives a more definite call on what a person of hispanic descent is, mainly because it's an ethnicity vice a race. Anyone know what the census definitions in the various countries affected define it as?--Mitsukai 16:44, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
- The article Hispanic says: "In Spain and Spanish-speaking Latin America, Hispano ("Hispanic") is ascribed as indicating a derivation from Spain, her people and culture. It follows the same style of use as Anglo indicates a derivation of England and the English, Hellenic of Greece and the Greeks, or Sino of Chinaand the Chinese." I think that's a good definition. --Zaqarbal (Vicipædiator Hispanus) 17:00, 28 December 2005 (UTC)
- Works for me, then. As long as we've got something definite (and that qualifies, IMHO), then I'm perfectly fine with it.--Mitsukai 17:04, 28 December 2005 (UTC)

- The name of this list implies it is about Hispanics (Latinos) and not Hispanics (Hispania Spanish and Portuguese). Why include so many Spanish and Portuguese? This isn't what the list is for - thats just digressing to "proper name" disputes. Antidote 08:50, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
- I don't agree about that. The name of this list implies it is about Hispanics, whether they are from Spain or from the Americas. Just look at the Hispanic Society of America website. Why does it include "so much" Spanish Art? --Zaqarbal 18:50, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

- Can we split up the list then? It's pointless to bicker about all this, and there's got to be some sort of solution. While I do think the list can be about Latin American hispanics, I don't have a problem with it including Iberian hispanics. Maybe the best solution is to split it into List of Hispanics and List of Iberians or something of the sort?--Mitsukai 13:39, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
- The solution is simple: we could remove some Spanish names and add more Hispanics from the Americas to the list. I'll do it myself if you agree, O.K.? --Zaqarbal 18:50, 29 December 2005 (UTC)
This list should only include American Hispanics, i.e. those Hispanics (from LatAm or Spain) that have succeeded in the US and represent American diversity. Making a list of all notable people who happen to speak Spanish does not make any sense at all. Would you make a single list of all famous English speaking people?? Pjgonzalez 21:17, 30 April 2006 (UTC)
- I propose to make three lists:
- A list of Hispanic Americans (USA). It is already edited, but it needs to be improved.
- A list of Latin Americans, including brazilians.
- A list of Hispanophones. Why not ? --Zaqarbal 02:06, 1 May 2006 (UTC)
- Right, this page is a mess... I guess it could serve as a kind of parent page and link to a few smaller ones, including Hispanic Americans. Mad Jack O'Lantern 03:14, 21 May 2006 (UTC)
[edit] New lists.
I've edited a list of Latin Americans and a list of hispanophones. Of course they can be improved. And now, what can we do with this page? A disambiguation page, a redirection to Notable Hispanics (U.S.A.), ...? --Zaqarbal 01:02, 3 June 2006 (UTC)
- Any suggestions? --Zaqarbal 23:04, 3 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] List of Anglos
I can't find the List of Notable Anglos. Could somebody build a link to it?
Come one, don't be silly. There is no such thing as an Anglo. Yet there is such a thing as Italian, German, Polish, or Scots-Irish. And if you search wiki, you will see pages on people from these backgrounds--207.218.96.3 19:31, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Brook Shields erased
The link didn't work, and the wiki article talks about an Italian descent, not Latin American or Spanish.--207.218.96.3 19:31, 12 December 2006 (UTC)
